MPEG-1 Video exploits perceptual compression methods to significantly reduce the data rate required by a video stream. Apple uses M4V to encode video files in its iTunes Store. The primary difference is that M4V files may optionally be protected by DRM copy protection. The M4V file format is a video container format developed by Apple and is very similar to the MP4 format. It is designed to compress VHS-quality raw digital video and CD audio down to 1.5 Mbit/s (26:1 and 6:1 compression ratios respectively) without excessive quality loss, making video CDs, digital cable/satellite TV and digital audio broadcasting (DAB) possible. MPEG-1 is a standard for lossy compression of video and audio. Motion Picture Experts Group File Interchange Format
